Iyengar yoga

Iyengar yoga is classical hatha yoga as developed and taught by yogacharya BKS Iyengar, one of the foremost yoga teachers in the world.

Iyengar yoga puts strong emphasis on alignment, precision and safety to develop the student’s strength, flexibility, concentration and self-awareness. Students learn through a systematic and progressive approach to asana (posture) and pranayama (breath control).

Props such as ropes, straps and blocks may be used, so that each student can practise the postures safely, effectively, and to the best of their ability. This makes the practice accessible to everyone.

Iyengar yoga practice relaxes and energises the body and mind.

I went to my first Iyengar yoga class in 1988 and whilst my travels and thirst for exploration took me to many other methods, Iyengar yoga has always been the backbone of my practice. After the birth of my second child in 2003, I experienced the healing power and intelligence of the practice in such profundity that I have since dedicated myself to the Iyengar method. I am certified to Level 3 and continuously study in order to deepen my personal practice and my teaching. I love the extraordinary challenge of this practice and the infinite gifts of awareness.

I am very grateful to my teacher Alaric Newcombe for the joy and genius with which he shares his deep understanding of asana and pranayama.

I am also grateful to Patsy Sparksman for her generosity in sharing her huge knowledge of the therapeutic application of Iyengar yoga.
